Teen Buckeye Book Award

I.  Background to the Award.

The Teen Buckeye Book Award ("TBBA") is an Ohio state book award.  It was added to the pre-exting Buckeye Children's Book Award in 2003.  The award is administered by the Buckeye Children's Book Award Council, which is made up of Ohio teachers and librarians. The award is "designed to encourage students in Ohio to read literature critically, to promote teacher and librarian involvement in young adult literature programs, and to commend authors of such literature" (TBBA, About Us).  In the two award cycles since this award was established, teens have nominated books for the award one year, and then voted on which books they think should win the award during the following year.  Beginning in December of 2007, the award procedures have changed.  Starting with the 2008 award, Ohio teens will nominate their favorite books during a three month period (beginning December 1 and ending March 1).  Once the nominations have been submitted, the Buckeye Children's Book Award Council will compile the nominations and post the top five candidates during mid-March so that teens will be able to read these books during the summer.  The 2008 nominees can be viewed here.  Voting will then take place during October and November.  The Buckeye Children's Book Award Council will calculate the votes and announce the winner on December 1.  On the left is the 2007 symbol for the TBBA award (from the TBBA website).  The current nomination rules only allow teens to nominate books that were published within the previous two years, and the author must be an American.  While "honor" books are not named, in the two award cycles to date, second and third place books were announced in 2005 and an additional fourth place book was announced in 2007.  Below is a list, by year, of the Teen Buckeye Book Award winners.
