I. Background to the Award.

 

The Stonewall Book Awards are awarded annually to the best fiction and non-fiction lesbigay books.  The official titles for these two awards are the Stonewall Book Award: Barbara Gittings Literature Award for Fiction and the Stonewall Book Award: Israel Fishman Award for Non-fiction (ALA, Stonewall Book Awards). These awards are sponsored by the American Library Association's (ALA) Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table. Since the first award was given out in 1971, the Stonewall Award has seen many changes.  What was orginally known as the Gay Book Award became the Gay and Lesbian Book Award in 1987 after the ALA became an official sponsor of this award.  The 1990's brought about two name changes, the separation of fiction and non-fiction awards, and the creation of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table (ALA, Stonewall Book Awards). In 2002, the awards were re-named to the present-day titles.
