Quill Awards

I.  Background to the Award.

The only nationally televised book award, the Quill Awards celebrate the years most "entertaining and enlighting titles" (Quill Awards, About). The Quill Awards are proudly sponsored by Reed Business Information and NBC. To be eligible to be nominated for a Quill, books must meet three key criteria. They are: a starred review in Publishers Weekly, position on the Publishers Weekly Bestsellers List, and the special selection of the committee (Quill Awards, Nominating & Voting). The nominated books must have also been published in North America in English. There are 19 categories for works to be nominated in. Each category will have be narrowed down to a group of five nominees (Quill Awards, Nominating & Voting). These 5 nominees will be judged by a panel of editors from Publishers Weekly. What is interesting about the Quill award is that viewers can vote online for The Book of the Year award. Below are the winners from the following categories: Book of the Year and General Fiction. 2007:

• Book of the Year Award:

  • Angels Fall by Nora Roberts, (G.P. Putnam's Sons ).

     

• General Fiction Award:

  • The Road by Cormac McCarthy, (Alfred A. Knopf).

     

 2006:

• Book of the Year Award:

  • Don't Make a Black Woman Take off Her Earrings: Madea's Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life by Tyler Perry, (Riverhead).

     

• General Fiction Award:

  • A Dirty Job: A Novel by Christopher Moore, (William Morrow).

     

 2005:

• Book of the Year Award:

  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling, Mary GrandPré (Illustrator), (Arthur Levine/Scholastic).

     

• General Fiction Award:

  • The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd, (Viking Press).
